I was invited to attend the Marie Claire 'Women of Style & Substance' event a few weeks ago. I invited YY along. The theme was stylish. But how to be stylish when I'll be going right after work?? Takkan dress up all super glam to work. People would think I'm crazy. And since the event was at Bangsar, which was like a corner away from my office, it made no sense for me to go home and change. No time to do that anyway.
So anyway, I google-mapped the event venue before I left the office. Google map told me it's at the row of shops right opposite Telawi, along the main road of Jalan Maarof. I drove along the road slowly but couldn't find the place. I decided to park at one of the furniture shops along the row to wait for YY. When she came, we went into the shop to ask for directions, but the shop owner had no idea where Zinc Art Space was. She wanted to close shop but we told her we'd leave our cars at her place for just a few minutes to quickly walk a few shops down to check. And nope. Nothing!
So we drove along the road slowly many many times. Drove from one end of the road to the other end. Even drove along the road behind, js in case we both got the road name wrong. OMG! Wad's wrong?! Why couldn't we find the bloody place??!!!
Best thing was, I didn't save the number of the girl who invited me, so couldn't even call to ask for directions. We finally pulled up to a petrol kiosk and were thinking, ok, this is the last straw. If the kiosk attendants couldn't help us, we'd just forget it and go home. We were already an hour plus late! Yesss!! We've been driving around the area looking for over an hour!!
And nope, the kiosk attendants didn't know where it was as well. As I walked outta the kiosk, I spotted a police car parked nearby. In a last desperate attempt, I walked up to the police officers and asked them. Even they haven't heard of the place. WTH!! YY was pro-active. She called her friend to google the location for us. While waiting for her friend to call her back, it suddenly struck me! I have a GPS in the car!! Coz I was driving Yacs' car. OMG!!! So stuuupeeeedd!!! Why didn't I think of using it earlier, like an hour ago?? Just as I was switching on the GPS, YY's friend called and told her where it was. So google maps was wrong! The friend clicked on the venue's website, which had a map and the place was actually at the opposite side of the road, down to the very end, near the Indian Temple.
We decided to leave YY's car at the petrol kiosk and go in 1 car, just in case parking was difficult to find. Smart of us. Coz really, there were no parking. Only found a tiny spot at the side of the busy road after making one round. And coz I was not driving my car, I was really careful while trying to squeeze into the space, and took quite a long time. Finally, YY offered to help me park. I tot ok, maybe she's better. But no lor! She's the same!!! Till the Indian parking fella came over and asked me with a confused look, "You mau keluar?" I told him nope, we're parking. After observing YY for a few seconds, he asked again, "You mau keluar ke masuk?" "Masuk." He had this bewildered expression on his face but did not say anything anymore. Then finally, bless her, YY managed to park the car.
Off we trotted to the event, which was ending soon. I lost all my excitement and with all the driving around, etc, didn't feel stylish at all! There were lots of women who were wearing floor-length gowns and had their hair all done up. One even had sprinkles of gold dust in her hair. Okaaaay... Gold dust?? Hmmm...
Well, I certainly wasn't part of the best-dressed but thankfully wasn't the worst-dressed as well. I tried looking for the girl who invited me, but couldn't find her or maybe I couldn't recognize her if she was one of those with all the hair and makeup done.
Oh well, managed to have a flute of champagne and some canapes and a goody bag. Managed to catch a glimpse of the very elegant Andrea Fonseka. She looked like a true beauty queen. The beauty queen aura of hers was oozing from every pore of her body. She made me feel like an ugly dwarf. Sigh... To be that tall, flawless, elegant and beautiful.... Maybe another lifetime...
I was starving coz it was late and I didn't have anything to eat except for the few canapes. The event ended less than half an hour after we arrived. So, I decided to go off. Wanna eatttt!!!
What an evening! I was looking forward to having a good time at the event, mana tau, all the drama happened. Sigh... I blame google-maps!!!
